Bermuda floats in splendid isolation in the North Atlantic โ 1,000 kilometers from the US coast, this British Overseas Territory of just 54 square kilometers packs extraordinary beauty into its 181 islands. Pink-sand beaches, pastel-colored houses with white limestone roofs designed to catch rainwater, and the clearest turquoise waters in the Atlantic define this unique archipelago.
Despite its tiny size, Bermuda punches well above its weight as a global financial center, with one of the world's highest GDPs per capita. The island's blend of British colonial charm, Caribbean warmth, and mid-Atlantic sophistication creates an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on Earth.
Named after Spanish navigator Juan de Bermรบdez, who sighted the islands around 1505. The territory is officially called "The Bermudas" or "Somers Isles" โ the latter honoring Sir George Somers, whose 1609 shipwreck on the reefs led to permanent English settlement. Bermudians refer to their home simply as "the Rock."
Bermuda comprises 181 islands atop an extinct submarine volcano, with the seven largest connected by bridges. The main island is just 35 km long and less than 2 km wide. Coral reefs surround the archipelago, creating lagoons of impossibly clear water. The famous pink-sand beaches get their color from crushed coral and the shells of foraminifera (single-celled marine organisms) that live on the reefs.
The islands are divided into nine parishes: Sandys, Southampton, Warwick, Paget, Pembroke (containing Hamilton), Devonshire, Smith's, Hamilton Parish, and St. George's.
Sighted by Juan de Bermรบdez around 1505 but left uninhabited due to its dangerous reefs. In 1609, the English ship Sea Venture, en route to Jamestown, wrecked on Bermuda's reefs โ the survivors built two new ships and continued, but the event inspired Shakespeare's The Tempest and led to permanent English settlement in 1612. Bermuda became a strategic naval base for the Royal Navy, and its economy depended on shipbuilding, salt trade, and (until 1834) slavery.
In the 20th century, US military bases (1941โ1995) and the rise of international business and reinsurance transformed Bermuda into one of the world's wealthiest territories. It remains a self-governing British Overseas Territory.
Bermuda's 64,000 residents are predominantly of African descent (54%), reflecting the island's history of slavery (abolished 1834). European Bermudians (31%) and other groups create a diverse society. Bermudian culture blends British formality with Caribbean rhythm โ Gombey dancers in elaborate, colorful costumes represent the island's African, Caribbean, Native American, and British heritage, performing at holidays and celebrations.
Cricket is a near-religion: the annual Cup Match (held since 1902) between Somerset and St. George's clubs is a two-day public holiday and the cultural highlight of the year.
Hamilton, the capital since 1815, is a compact waterfront city of pastel buildings, duty-free shops, and the imposing Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. Front Street faces the harbor where cruise ships dock. Don't miss the Bermuda National Gallery, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, and Fort Hamilton's panoramic views.

Founded in 1612 and Bermuda's capital until 1815, the Town of St. George is the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the New World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2000, together with the related fortifications). Wander King's Square, the replica stocks, St. Peter's Church (the oldest Anglican church in the Western Hemisphere, 1612), and the Unfinished Church.

At the West End of the island, the Royal Naval Dockyard was built by enslaved labor and convicts in the early 19th century as the "Gibraltar of the West." Today it houses the National Museum of Bermuda (inside the Keep), the Dolphin Quest, the Clocktower Mall, and the cruise-ship terminal. The Commissioner's House offers panoramic views of the Great Sound.

Bermudian cuisine fuses British, African, Portuguese (from 19th-century Azorean immigrants), and Caribbean influences. Seafood dominates, especially rockfish, wahoo, and the iconic spiny lobster (in season SeptemberโMarch).
๐ฒ Traditional Dishes
Bermuda Fish Chowder โ the national dish: a dark, spiced tomato-based soup made with rockfish, splashed at the table with Gosling's Black Seal Rum and Outerbridge's Sherry Peppers Sauce. Codfish & Potatoes โ the traditional Sunday breakfast, salt cod boiled with potatoes and served with banana, avocado, and a hard-boiled egg in tomato-onion sauce. Hoppin' John โ black-eyed peas and rice cooked together. Bermuda Cassava Pie โ a Christmas tradition: grated cassava sweetened, mixed with eggs, and baked around chicken or pork.

๐ Recipe: Bermuda Fish Chowder
Ingredients: 1 kg rockfish or grouper bones & flesh, 2 onions, 4 garlic cloves, 1 carrot, 2 celery sticks, 1 green pepper, 800 g tomatoes (tinned), 2 tbsp tomato paste, bay leaves, thyme, allspice, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, 2 L fish stock. To finish: Gosling's Black Seal Rum, Outerbridge's Sherry Peppers Sauce.
Method: Sautรฉ chopped onion, garlic, carrot, celery, and pepper in butter until soft. Add tomato paste and cook 2 min. Pour in tinned tomatoes, fish stock, herbs and spices. Simmer 30 min. Add fish; simmer 15 min more. Season. Serve in bowls; at the table each diner adds a splash of dark rum and a dash of sherry peppers sauce โ this is non-negotiable.
Bermuda has no wine production. The isolated Atlantic archipelago โ subtropical, humid, with thin limestone soils โ has no conditions for commercial viticulture. Gosling's Black Seal Rum (made by Gosling Brothers since 1806) is Bermuda's signature spirit, and the Dark 'n Stormy (Gosling's Black Seal floated over ginger beer) is the island's trademarked national cocktail โ one of the very few cocktails legally protected by trademark. Rum Swizzle, the unofficial national drink (dark and gold rum, fruit juices, bitters), is served at every bar. Bermuda's proximity to the US East Coast and its position as a major financial centre mean that excellent imported wines from California, France, and Italy are readily available in restaurants and the duty-free shops on Front Street.

๐น Dark 'n Stormy (national cocktail)
Ingredients: 60 ml Gosling's Black Seal Rum, 120 ml Barritt's or Gosling's ginger beer, lime wedge, ice.
Method: Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour ginger beer first. Float the rum on top โ do not stir; the cloudy "storm" should sit dark over the lighter beer. Garnish with lime. By trademark, only Gosling's rum makes a real Dark 'n Stormy.
๐น Bermuda Rum Swizzle
Ingredients (serves 4): 120 ml Gosling's Black Seal Rum, 120 ml Gosling's Gold Seal Rum, 150 ml orange juice, 150 ml pineapple juice, 30 ml grenadine, 30 ml fresh lime juice, 6 dashes Angostura bitters, crushed ice.
Method: Combine in a pitcher, add crushed ice, and "swizzle" with a swizzle stick (or stir vigorously) until the outside frosts. Strain into chilled coupes. Best at the Swizzle Inn, Bailey's Bay.

Bermuda enjoys a humid subtropical climate moderated by the Gulf Stream. Summers (MayโOctober) are warm and humid (24โ30ยฐC), while winters (DecemberโMarch) are mild (15โ20ยฐC) โ too cool for swimming for most visitors but pleasant for golf and sightseeing. The hurricane season runs JuneโNovember, with September being the peak risk month. Best time to visit: AprilโJune and SeptemberโOctober.
L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA) on St. David's Island is the only commercial airport. Direct flights from New York (JFK, EWR), Boston, Atlanta, Toronto, London Gatwick, and seasonal connections from other US cities. Flight time from NYC: ~2 hours. Cruise ships arrive at King's Wharf (Dockyard), Hamilton, and St. George's between April and October.
Visa: No visa required for US, EU, UK, Canadian, and most Commonwealth citizens for stays up to 90 days. Currency: Bermudian Dollar (BMD), pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar โ USD is accepted everywhere. Language: English. Driving: Left-hand side. Visitors cannot rent cars โ only mopeds/scooters or twizys (electric two-seaters). Plugs: US-style 120 V. Health: Excellent medical facilities; travel insurance essential as healthcare is expensive.
Bermuda is one of the most expensive destinations in the world. Hotels rarely under USD 300/night in season; mid-range restaurant meals USD 40โ60 per person; a Dark 'n Stormy at a beach bar USD 12โ15. Budget travelers should consider guesthouses, cook in self-catering apartments, and use the excellent (and cheap) public bus system.
Iconic resorts include the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (the "Pink Palace," 1885), the Rosewood Bermuda at Tucker's Point, and the Fairmont Southampton. Boutique options include the Cambridge Beaches cottage colony in Sandys. For budget travelers, guesthouses in Paget and St. George's, and Airbnbs across the parishes.
Cup Match (late July/early August) โ two-day cricket holiday between Somerset and St. George's clubs. Bermuda Day (May 24) โ heritage parade with Gombey dancers and the Half-Marathon Derby. Harbour Nights (Wednesday evenings, MayโSeptember) โ Front Street closes for music, food, and crafts. Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts (JanuaryโFebruary). Boxing Day Gombey street performances.
Historic Town of St. George and Related Fortifications, Bermuda (inscribed 2000) โ the only UNESCO site in Bermuda. It encompasses the Town of St. George and a series of coastal forts (including Fort St. Catherine, Gates Fort, and the Castle Islands fortifications) that illustrate the development of English military engineering from the 17th to 20th centuries.

โข Bermuda has more golf courses per square mile than any country on Earth. โข The white "stepped" limestone roofs are designed to collect rainwater โ Bermuda has no rivers or natural fresh water source. โข The Bermuda Triangle myth has no basis in fact: shipping in the area is no more dangerous than any other busy ocean region. โข Bermuda uses British-style postage stamps and has the highest minimum wage of any British territory. โข There are more registered insurance companies than residents.
Flora Duffy โ Olympic gold medalist in triathlon (Tokyo 2020); Bermuda is the smallest nation ever to win an individual Olympic gold. Gina Swainson โ Miss World 1979. Clyde Best โ pioneering Black footballer for West Ham United in the 1970s. Heather Nova โ singer-songwriter. Michael Douglas โ actor with deep Bermuda roots through his Bermudian mother Diana Dill.
Cricket is the national obsession, with the Cup Match the cultural highlight. Sailing runs deep โ Bermuda hosted the 35th America's Cup in 2017 in the Great Sound. Triathlon (thanks to Flora Duffy), rugby (the World Rugby Classic is held annually in November), and golf complete the picture. The Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby on Bermuda Day is the island's biggest running event.
The Royal Gazette (daily newspaper since 1828) and Bernews.com are the primary news sources. ZBM Television provides local broadcasting. Bermuda's small size means tight-knit media with strong community connections, and the territory enjoys a free press environment consistent with British Overseas Territory standards.

At the Swizzle Inn in Bailey's Bay โ claiming to be Bermuda's oldest pub, with the immortal motto "Swizzle Inn, Swagger Out" โ I sat at the long bar under thousands of business cards stapled to the ceiling and ordered a Rum Swizzle from a bartender who had been mixing them for forty years. He asked where I was from, and when I said "Prague," he nodded slowly and said, "I knew a fellow from there once. Sailor. Drank his swizzle straight, no ice." Outside, a moped buzzed past on the wrong side of the road โ which here is the right side โ and the air smelled of frangipani and salt. Bermuda defies easy categorization: it is British but not, Caribbean but not, American-adjacent but distinctly its own. The pink beaches and turquoise water are stunning, but it is the island's quiet self-assurance, its perfectly maintained pastel world, and its genuine sense of community that make it truly memorable. I left with a damp business card in my wallet and the certainty that I would come back.
