How we handle your data
We collect only the data needed to operate the website, communicate with you, deliver newsletters, measure performance, and provide services you explicitly request. This page explains what we use and why.
Privacy without the legal fog
Kaufmann World Travel Factbook is a public travel website. You do not need an account for ordinary reading. Some features naturally require data, such as an email address for the newsletter or information you submit through a contact form.
Analytics
We use aggregated operational and analytics data to measure traffic and website performance.
Forms
Information you submit is used only to handle the specific request you sent us.
Newsletter
Newsletters are sent to subscribers. Contacts from earlier correspondence are kept separate from the subscriber audience.
AWS infrastructure
The website and most backend services run on Amazon Web Services infrastructure.
Data minimization
We do not collect personal data simply because it can be collected. If information is not needed to provide a specific service, it should not be part of that service’s normal operation.
What may be processed
1. Ordinary website use
When the website loads, standard technical records are created for content delivery, security, and diagnostics. These may include the requested URL, request time, browser-related technical information, or network information.
2. Traffic analytics
We use Plausible Analytics and AWS operational statistics. The goal is to understand traffic, performance, and errors—not to build an advertising profile of an individual person.
3. Contact forms
If you contact us, we process your name, email address, subject, and message to respond. The contact service also uses a network address to limit spam; that address is included in the delivered message and technical records.
4. Newsletter
When you subscribe, we store your email address, subscription status, and a consent record including the time, source page, and consent-text version. The newsletter is published in English. Each subscriber mailing includes a personal unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops the subscription; a record of that status may remain to prevent accidental re-enrollment. Contacts from earlier direct correspondence may be held separately as contacts awaiting consent. Previous correspondence alone does not subscribe anyone to the newsletter, and these contacts are excluded from subscriber mailings and the public count. You can request access, correction, or deletion using the email below.
5. Cookies and local storage
Some parts of the website use Plausible Analytics, which does not require advertising cookies. Local storage also holds technical preferences such as the theme or interface state. The travel checklist is remembered on your device only when you select that option. Unit conversions, the budget calculation, and birth-date zodiac selection run in your browser without sending the entered values to a server.
6. External services
Depending on the feature you use, data may be processed by infrastructure, payment, or communications providers. This includes AWS in particular; purchases or payments may also involve the relevant payment providers.
7. Security
Communication with the website uses HTTPS. We use cloud infrastructure, access controls, and other technical measures. No internet-connected system, however, can be described as absolutely secure.
8. Your rights
Where applicable data-protection laws cover a particular processing activity, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or exercise other applicable rights. Requests are handled under the relevant legal framework.
