Overview

Vanuatu is a Y-shaped archipelago of 83 islands scattered across 1,300 kilometers of the South Pacific, roughly 1,750 km east of Australia. This is Melanesia at its most raw and magical — active volcanoes you can peer into, pristine blue holes of impossible clarity, ancient kastom (custom) villages where traditional culture lives on virtually unchanged, and some of the friendliest people on Earth. The nation consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the world despite being one of the least developed.

Independent since 1980 from joint Anglo-French colonial rule (the "Condominium"), Vanuatu offers a Pacific experience far removed from resort tourism. Here you'll find the land-diving towers of Pentecost — the original bungee jumping, performed as a harvest ritual for centuries — the apocalyptic glow of Mount Yasur's lava lake on Tanna, and underwater wrecks from World War II that have become spectacular dive sites. Bislama, the creole lingua franca, is delightfully expressive and immediately endearing.

Name & Identity

The name "Vanuatu" means "Our Land Forever" in several local languages, chosen at independence to replace the colonial name "New Hebrides." Ni-Vanuatu identity is rooted in kastom — the complex system of traditional beliefs, practices, and social obligations that varies from island to island. With over 100 distinct languages spoken by just 320,000 people, Vanuatu has the highest language density per capita on Earth.

Bislama, the creole language that unifies this diversity, is English-based but uniquely Pacific. "Long" means "at/in/on," "blong" means "of/belonging to," and the country's parliament is the "Palamen blong Vanuatu." The John Frum cargo cult on Tanna — which reveres an American serviceman from World War II — remains a living religious movement, with followers raising the US flag each Friday. This is a country where tradition and modernity coexist in fascinating ways.

Geography

Vanuatu's 83 islands (65 inhabited) are volcanic in origin, sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire where the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates collide. The archipelago stretches from the Torres Islands in the north to Aneityum in the south. Espiritu Santo is the largest island, home to the famous Million Dollar Point and the stunning blue holes. History

Melanesian peoples settled Vanuatu around 3,000 years ago, developing the complex kastom societies that persist today. The Lapita culture left pottery traces throughout the islands. European contact came with Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606, who named the largest island "Espiritu Santo" believing he had found the southern continent. Captain Cook mapped the archipelago in 1774, naming it the "New Hebrides" after the Scottish islands.

The 19th century brought sandalwood traders, blackbirders (slavers who kidnapped islanders for plantation labor), and missionaries. In 1906, Britain and France established the bizarre Anglo-French Condominium — a joint colonial administration with parallel legal systems, separate police forces, and three courts (British, French, and joint). This "Pandemonium," as locals called it, lasted until independence on July 30, 1980, after a brief secessionist crisis on Espiritu Santo.

The Ni-Vanuatu are Melanesian, with over 100 distinct language groups creating extraordinary cultural diversity across the islands. Kastom — traditional custom — governs much of rural life, from pig-killing ceremonies that determine social rank to the spectacular land diving (naghol) on Pentecost island. Men leap from tall wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles, brushing the earth to ensure a good yam harvest. This ancient ritual inspired modern bungee jumping.

Christianity (largely Presbyterian and Catholic) now overlays traditional beliefs, creating a syncretic spiritual landscape where Sunday church services coexist with kastom ceremonies. Sand drawing, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, serves as a communication system across language barriers — complex geometric patterns traced in sand or volcanic ash convey stories, rituals, and information. Music revolves around string bands playing ukulele-driven island pop, and the Rom dance of Ambrym island features elaborate masks and costumes.

Port Vila — The Capital

Port Vila, on the island of Efate, is Vanuatu's capital and only real town, home to about 50,000 people. The waterfront is lively with markets, restaurants, and harbour views, while the central market sells tropical produce, fresh fish, and local crafts. The town retains a slightly ramshackle Pacific charm — nothing too polished, which is part of the appeal. The Melanesian Cultural Centre provides an excellent introduction to kastom traditions.

Around Efate, the Hideaway Island marine sanctuary offers snorkeling over a submerged post office (yes, you can mail a waterproof postcard), while the Mele Cascades waterfalls tumble through lush jungle. Ekasup Village offers guided tours of a functioning traditional village. Port Vila also serves as the base for diving the SS President Coolidge off Santo and visiting the outer islands by small plane or boat.

Tanna & Mount Yasur

Tanna island is Vanuatu's most culturally rich and geologically dramatic destination. Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, has been erupting continuously for at least 800 years. Visitors can drive to the rim and stand just meters from explosive eruptions of molten lava — an utterly primal experience, especially at night when the orange glow illuminates the ash plain below. The Yakel village near Yasur maintains completely traditional kastom life, with residents wearing nambas (penis sheaths) and grass skirts.

Tanna is also home to the remarkable John Frum cargo cult movement, centered around Sulphur Bay, where followers believe an American figure will return bearing material wealth. The island's interior harbors the stunning Blue Cave, giant banyan trees, and hot springs fed by volcanic activity. A trek across the ash plain to Yasur's crater at sunset is one of the Pacific's most unforgettable experiences.

Espiritu Santo

Espiritu Santo is Vanuatu's largest island and a diver's paradise. The SS President Coolidge — a luxury liner converted to a troopship and sunk by friendly mines in 1942 — is considered one of the world's greatest wreck dives, accessible from the shore in Luganville. Million Dollar Point, where the US military dumped millions of dollars' worth of equipment into the sea rather than give it to the locals, creates a surreal underwater landscape of jeeps, bulldozers, and Coca-Cola bottles.

Santo's real magic lies in its blue holes — freshwater pools of such intense, luminous blue that they seem digitally enhanced. Nanda Blue Hole, Riri Blue Hole, and the Matevulu Blue Hole are all accessible by road and absolutely jaw-dropping. The Millennium Cave trek through dense jungle, river crossings, and a vast underground cavern is one of the Pacific's best adventure activities. Champagne Beach, with its powder-white sand and bath-warm water, is regularly voted among the world's best beaches.

Cuisine

Vanuatu's cuisine centers on the laplap — the national dish, made from grated root vegetables (yam, taro, or manioc) mixed with coconut cream, wrapped in banana leaves, and baked in an underground earth oven (umu). The result is a dense, satisfying staple that accompanies island chicken, pork, or fresh fish. Tuluk is a variant wrapped like a tamale. Coconut is ubiquitous — coconut cream enriches everything, and fresh coconut water is the default refreshment.

Seafood is outstanding: fresh-caught reef fish, coconut crab (a massive, tree-climbing delicacy), and lobster. The Central Market in Port Vila sells tropical fruits, fresh fish, and prepared foods at remarkably low prices. Island Night buffets at hotels offer a chance to try multiple traditional dishes. Kava — the mildly narcotic drink made from the root of the pepper plant — is central to ni-Vanuatu social life, consumed in dedicated nakamals (kava bars) every evening. Vanuatu has a tropical maritime climate. November to April is hot and wet (cyclone season, 28-32°C). May to October is cooler and drier (23-28°C) — the best time to visit. Cyclones are a real risk; Cyclone Pam devastated the country in 2015.

Air Vanuatu flies from Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Nouméa, and Fiji to Port Vila. Domestic flights reach Tanna, Santo, and Malekula. Inter-island cargo ships provide adventurous alternatives.
